Child labour is harmful for children's health and development. Elimination of Child labour is possible through participation of all in the society, said the speakers. People's Oriented Programme Implementation (POPI) an NGO and Learning for Life, UK based organisation jointly organised a workshop on 'Child Labour Elimiantion in Bangladesh' held at Hotel Rupushi Bangla in the capital on Saturday noon.
POPI has been working to eliminate the child labour in Bhairab bazar under Kishoregonj and Cox's bazar districts.
Labour and Employment Secretary Mikhail Shiper attended as Chief Guest with POPI executive director Morshed Ataur Sarker in the chair.
It was addressed, among others, by TDH, Netherland Country Director Mahamudul Kabir (Special Guest), Save the Children and ILO Country Director Shahida Begum (Special Guest), Communication Limited Managing Director Sharafuddin Khan, Sufia Sami, Md Solaiman Miah, Md Hanif, Mizanur Rahman and school boy Md Enayetullah.
Labour and Employment Secretary Mikhail Shiper said that children engaged in hazardous child labour in the shoe factories in Bhairab to manage their three times livelihood. Their life was framed under hazardous work most of hours in day. This situation is also common in all over Bangladesh. Child Labour is caused by poverty and thus children are deprived from the light of education and basic needs.
According to law and Constitution children should be sent in school's preventing the child labour. National Child Labour Policy says that child labour has to be eliminated by 2015.
