. BSS, Dhaka
The government has incorporated several new initiatives to launch an extensive child health campaign under the country's National Nutrition Services (NNS), one of the world's largest health care programme, officials said here yesterday.
"It (NNS) has been redesigned by incorporating several time- befitting programmes and initiatives to improve infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices to address child malnutrition," Director of Institute of Public health Nutrition Professor Dr Md Ekhlasur Rahman told BSS on the sidelines of a media colloquium on child healthcare.
He said previously no doctor at upazila level hospitals were appointed to oversee the child feeding practices but under the new initiatives one doctor was engaged at each state-run upazila hospital while a nutrition worker was appointed at each community clinic across the country under the NNS to promote child nutritional status.
Chairperson of Bangladesh Breastfeeding Foundation Dr SK Roy, Chairperson of Training and Assistance for Health and Nutrition Foundation and senior journalists of print and electronic media, among others, addressed the programme.
Dr Roy said malnutrition rate among the children are still high in the country as most of the people even affluent section do not have adequate health knowledge. He said both print and electronic media could play an important role in educating the people on child health, which will reduce malnutrition problem.
Other speakers stressed the need for developing a relationship between journalists and doctors for disseminating information on IYCF to make the people aware on children health.
