.
Sayeed Shuvo, RU:
The higher education in universities as well as in the colleges in a debacle as the students is dependent on the traditional fully hand notes and tuition. For the dependency on the note and tuition creativity of the students remain in the dark point. As a result the nation faces crisis of scientist, wise, learned and efficient manpower for its development. Besides that education system is responsible for such condition alleged many teachers and students.
According to some Senior Professors of Rajshahi University (RU) is mostly the education system becomes dependent on hand note and even on tuition. In spite of having a rich library of RU where many books, journals, and seminar libraries in every department, which there are for the teachers- students this resources remain unutilised.
The rate of presence of students and teachers in the library and seminar libraries of the departments is very poor. Though some students regularly work in the library, they read only the traditional notes than reading textbooks.
After passing 57 years most of the departments run their teaching and exams in Bengali medium except some departments of Science, Business and Law Faculty. The teaching system and the examination were in English medium in pre independent period. When the medium became Bengali then the teachers and students stay far away from the English medium books. This tendency brought a situation that a Masters degree obtained student cannot write an application in English. Besides that all the books, journals and sources including computer-internet base knowledge's are in English which cannot be used by the students and the teachers study in Bengali medium.
Since the teachers deliver lecture in Bengali in the classes and refers the Bengali books, the students find the traditional notes of their elder brother or sister who made the note before a decade.
The languages of the note copied by the students represent on answer scripts that bring first class result and general class result. As a result the students memorize the notes before exam and write on the answer script rather than study well. This tendency led the student in such a condition that the researcher for Masters in Philosophy (M Phil) and Doctorate in Philosophy (PhD) dissertation written in Bengali. The University administration allowed that and refers the M Phil and PhD degree availably to many researchers.
The student of first year newly admitted search the first boy or girls who have the notes of previous year. In here the newly admitted students adopt the way of tuition for getting the note of the respective student who has good results in the department.
The teachers of the university not engaged themselves in tuition but engaged in different consultant organization, share business, part time job in private universities violating the university act.
The tuition scenery is very much available at central library premises, fourth science building and different 'chattars' of the university.
Shariful Islam Salim and M Mansur Ali both are the LL.M students of Law and Justice department told the New Nation that, since the teachers not apply newly methods of teaching and delivering lectures so what we adopt the traditional notes. Besides that most of the students lost creativity in this level for so called traditional system that they learned during their student period. Alpona Sarker of Social Work Masters student and Rafiqul Islam of Mass communication department first year student told that traditional notes and tuition is the only way for us to do good result in the examination.
Moreover the teachers are not friendly in first time whenever we got admission and also are not responsible for taking class regularly. It should apply a system in which teachers bound to take class of the university as main duty, if not careful then fined for missing class for negligence said some master's students of Applied physics Department. International sea law specialist and also the Professor of Law and Justice Department of RU told the New Nation that, for the regrettable condition of the university, it is not for the students but also for the university administration.
During the appointment of teachers it should stressed up to the research points of the applicants for the teacher. He told that the university should ensure the impact factor that is at least two or three publications in international journals.
RU Vice Chancellor Prof M Abdus Sobhan told that, it is a matter of great sorrow that in higher education level such kind of photocopy and hand note practices is very common. He added that under the University Grants Commission Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project, a training for the teachers introduced.
