. Staff Reporter
Dr. Hasan Mahmud, minister for environment and forests said yesterday that even though there was by and large consensus on the system of government political instability was being fomented by elements that had opposed the war of liberation in 1971.
Addressing a discussion on stable system of government and the prevailing political unrest organized by NAP (Bhashani) at the Dhaka Rewporters' Unity as the chief guest he said that the main opposition BNP was allowing those who opposed the war of liberation to engage in terrorist activities. Presided over by Abu Hamidur Reza Khan Bhashani, chairman of the party, the discussion meeting was also addressed by Pankaj Bhattacharaya, convener, Gono Oikya Parisad, Nazimuddin Al-Azad, chairman BLDP, Kazi Abul Khair, secretary general, Bangladesh Muslim League and Mostafa Kamal Majumder, editor, The New Nation among others.
He said that instead of joining sessions of Parliament and offering constructive proposals on how to ensure credible elections, the opposition was engaged in destructive politics. The AL-led government has ensured major part of restoration of the 1972 Constitution and needed to be reelected to consolidate the gains, he said.
Pankaj Bhattacharaya said that although a consensus was achieved on the system of government after the restoration of democracy through movement, political stability remained a distant cry as those who opposed independence was still active to create trouble and invite foreign powers to intervene an destabilise the country.
Nazimuddin Al-Azad said the government should complete its full term for the sake of democracy, and all attempts to destabilise it should be stopped.
Mostafa Kamal Majumder said despite consensus on the system of government the major political parties differed on the system of election which should be sorted out by taking each other into confidence.
