State Minister for Law Quamrul Islam on Tuesday said the BNP-led 18-Party Alliance was not allowed to take out a procession at Naya Paltan because intelligence reports said the opposition was planning to trigger violence.
"They tried to set off violence in Chittagong on Sunday. We have an intelligence report on it," he told a meeting organised by Bangabandhu Academy at Dhaka Reporters' Unity on Tuesday.
Islam continued that the opposition tried to pull the same stunt on Monday also, but failed as law enforcers knew beforehand of their intention and did not permit the procession. The election is still two years away, but their actions under the guise of movement show that reinstatement of caretaker government is not their primary agenda, he added. "Destroying democracy is."
