Hartal observed peacefully

Dawn to dusk hartal called by the BNP-led 18-party alliance was  observed peacefully here yesterday  without any untoward incidents.
BNP-led great alliance enforced daylong hartal across the country following the arrest of 33 leaders of the alliance in Dhaka on Wednesday last. The major activities of the picketers in support of hartal not found in city area  excluding the sit-in program infront of city BNP office inJubilee road.Additional police forces have been deployed in important spots including BNP office in city. All types of shops in major markets including Khatungonj , Chaktai and in the main streets were closed during the period of hartal except kitchen markets. Rickshaws, auto-tempo were seen plying in a limited number in city areas and the bus, minibus, trucks went off road during the period. Attendance in govt, and public offices was poor than earlier. All mills and factories in the city resumes their normal work with less attendance, sources said. All school and colleges remain closed yesterday and the scheduled HSC exam of yesterday again fixed today.Internal load and unloading in port was normal but no consignment was delivered outside the port area. Huge numbers of trucks, lorries, container movers were seen waiting within the port area for carrying the cargos and containers after break of  hartal hours, a port sources said. 
 Tense situation is prevailing in Chittagong and elsewhere in the districts following the arrest of  senior leaders of BNP-led grand alliance in Dhaka . These leaders were arrested from the court premises of Dhaka district judge after reject of bail petition. BNP and its front organizations in Chittagong expressed solidarity to the call of strike across the country yesterday.
On the other hand   a component party of the alliance LDP puts siege program on Chittagong -Coxsbazar highway on Wednesday last  protesting the arrest of the leaders of the alliance .
