CCCI concerned at snail’s pace of Dhaka-Ctg Highway dev work

. Chittagong Bureau
President of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce  and  Industry  Murshed Murad Ibrahim expressed deep concern and urged the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her  intervention and necessary action in implementing Dhaka-Chittagong Highway four- lane work  to a greater pace so that it can meet the deadline.
He conveyed the message to the  Prime Minister yesterday.  In the message, mentioning Roads & Highways as prerequisite for development, Chamber President said that Chittagong is the economic hub of the country and most of the export-import goods are transported to different parts of it by using Dhaka-Chittagong Highway.
Moreover, the aim of the neighboring countries to use this highway for transit and Chittagong being considered as the most suitable place for investment in South and Southeast Asia have made the highway most important. Providing statistic, he stated that the Government initiated the project for Tk. 2,382 crore to make it four lanes from Daudkandi of Comilla upto Chittagong covering 192 km in order to make it of international standard. But it's a matter of great regret that the project has accomplished only 17% of it instead of 71% supposed to be completed within three years project time line and for various obstacles the work has been postponed since March, 2012. As a result, the businesses who are bound to use this highway for transportation are suffering beyond description. Moreover, the slow pace of the project is making it lengthy and more expensive as well.
Referring to the Prime Minister's declaration to transform it into six lanes under PPP, Chamber President urged for the Prime Minister's kind attention and immediate action in order to remove the bottlenecks in accomplishing the project in shortest possible time with a view to meet the demand of the business community of this region in order to transform Chittagong into regional business hub and enrich the economic development of the country at the same time, a sources of CCCI said.
