Judiciary now a puppet institution, says SCBA Chief

President of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Zainul Abedin on Thursday said the judiciary became a puppet institution now due to government interference.
Addressing a press conference at the South Hall of the bar association the SCBA chief said judiciary has already lost it’s power to function independently.
"The interference of government on the judiciary has created an adverse mindset about the judiciary among the people," he added.
Citing the court decision to send 33 opposition top leaders to jail in an arson case on Wednesday, Zainul Abedin said it seems that the court cannot function independently due to the government interference, which is regrettable for the litigants. The association president hoped that the chief justice would play a special role through his activities to protect the image of the judiciary.
Zainul Abedin said the people of the country particularly the lawyers had an expectation that the judiciary would function independently after it was separated from the executive and the people would get justice.
"But an adverse situation has been created recently due to blatant interference of the present government which is not good at all for the country, nation and democracy, " he said.
