Stolen Padma oil seized, 24 held

. Chittagong Bureau
A team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a raid held 24 people while they were illegally loading 9,000 liters of furnace oil collected from Padma Oil Depot into a ship on Sunday night.
They were held with 11 oil-loaded containers worth of several crore taka from Anu Majhir ghat under Double Mooring Thana around 10pm, sources said.
RAB Chittagong Zone's acting director Major Ziaul Ahsan Sarwar told the New Nation  that these oils were being collected using names of different factories and steel mills and being sold illegally in small ships.
At least 24 people were arrested red-handed in this connection and legal action will be taken against them after investigation, he added.
Refusing the claim, one of the detainees Sher Ali told that  "We had brought these oils from a ship-breaking yard in Baro Aulia of Sitakunda Upazila."
Sources concerned said RAB kept the matter under a close watch from three days on suspicion of furnace oils being sold illegally.
RAB personnel in plain clothes took position at Guptakal depot of Padma Oil from Sunday morning. After close observation, they conducted the drive at Anu Majhir ghat and picked up the 24 people.
Source said the detainees were taken to RAB office for interrogation.
