Egg, vegetables pricey in markets

Prices of essentials particularly of egg and vegetables have increased  suddenly in the city's kitchen markets adding to the sufferings of  the consumers.
The wholesale and the retail traders were selling essentials at exorbitant prices taking advantage of the lack of  government's market monitoring, consumers and market sources said.
Price of  farm egg has increased by Tk 16 to Tk 18 per four in the city's kitchen markets over a period of  only a few months. On Friday,  per four  egg was sold at Tk 40 as against Tk 22 to Tk 24   three months ago.  The traders blamed  crisis in the poultry business for the price hike. 
The sudden price-hike of egg has  hit the budget of  the people middle as well as income brackets.The consumers of these classes depend   on egg as substitute to fishes and  meat which are already dear in themarkets. The  high price of egg has upset the people  by and large, a frustrated  consumer said at Hatirpool Bazaar yestyerday.
The price of broiler chicken has also increased substantially in the city. Per kg of this item was sold at Tk 175 to Tk 185 yesterday.  Price of potato has registered  a rise  by Tk 3 to Tk 4 per kg. Yesterday, per kg potato was sold between Tk 25 and  Tk 28 in the city.   Brinjal and ladies finger were sold at Tk 40 to Tk 45 per kg, snake gourd at Tk 50 to Tk 55, bitter gourd at Tk 40, string bean at Tk 50 and  ribbed gourd  at Tk 50.
 Tomato was sold at Tk 40 to Tk 45 per kg yesterday. Per kg of onion was sold at Tk 27 to Tk 30 in the city against Tk 20 two weeks ago.
Prices of different varieties of rice have remained stable over last couple of months in the city markets. Per kg of Nazir Shail rice was sold between Tk 44 to Tk 54 depending on quality. Minicate (coarse quality) was sold at Tk 44 to Tk 47. The fine variety of this rice was sold at Tk 52 to Tk 55 per kg. Pajam and Lata Shail were sold at Tk 38 to Tk 40 per kg on Friday.
