National helpline for women & children opens

The Department of Women Affairs has started a 'national helpline center', the first of its kind in the country, to help resist repression on women and children.  Inaugurating the centre at a function here, Minister of State for Women and Children Affairs Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury said oppressed individuals and their families can seek help from any places making a phone call to the number '10921' from any operator across the country.

"This helpline centre will coordinate the concerned ministry to provide necessary services for an oppressed individual as per his requirement," she said.

The helpline centre has been established with the joint initiative of Bangladesh and Danish government under Women and Children Affairs Ministry.

Among others, Danish Ambassador to Bangladesh Svend Olling and Director General of Department of Women Affairs M Ashraf Hossain and Director of the programme Dr Abul Hossain also addressed the function with Secretary of the Ministry Tariq-ul- Alam in the chair.
