Tk.20crore fund for water- logging misused

Chittagong  City Corporation has  failed to mitigate water logging problems in  the city areas  following the heavy downpour in Chittagong for  five  days.
Most of  the drains and canals within city area are dumped with mud and  wastes and lost capacity of  rain stream . A sources of city corporation said Tk.20 crores spent in last two years for dredging of the canals and excavation of drains .
 Sufferers sources said the amount  spent for  dredging the canals and drains flown away with the recent flood without any benefit to the dwellers. Conscious dwellers allege that lack of proper guideline, the dredging work of the canals done left no results at all rather wastage of money. Mentionable that the first and foremost pledge in the election manifesto of city mayor was to remove water logging. Sources said after passing of  two years of mayor election, no visible development in water-logging yet to be witnessed . Former President of Engineers Institute of Chittagong and City Planner Eng Delwar Majumder told this reporter that there will positive mission and vision to mitigate water logging but city corporation has no such any one but they only conducting routine work only.A corporation sources said city corporation spent Tk.12 crores for reexcavation earth lifting of canals and drains in 2010-11 fiscal for 144 kilometer long 17 primary canals of the city. Tk.8 crore also spent for same work in current fiscal 2011-12. Sources further said in last one  year, 45 lakh cft earth was lifted from these canals.
A local sources of Boxhirhat ward said city corporation is liable for such unbearable sufferings of water-logging this year only because corporation demolished 4 bridges at a time aimed at reconstruction but lack of  reasons known to them , the work is not progressing for last one.
As such rain water from upstream could not be passed through this bridge passage due to construction materials dumped in the canals and huge household debris, wastes blocked the passage of water left water logging created no doubt.
When  asked a former councilor Jamal Hossain told this reporter that no earth lifting or dredging  from Miakhanager to  estuary of Karnaphuly River are done in last one year and blamed the present mayor for this sufferings of the dwellers.
