BNP urged to join all-party govt

Senior Awami League leader Suranjit Sengupta has urged the BNP to join an all-party interim government to oversee the general election.
In a discussion at the Dhaka Reporters' Unity (DRU) on Wednesday, the Minister Without Portfolio reiterated the government's stance even though the chief opposition party vowed to not allow any election except under a non-party caretaker government.
Suranjit pointed out that if an all-party interim government governed for the three months during the polls, when the Parliament will be dissolved, it would be more acceptable to the world.
"So I am urging the BNP to join in this all-party government." Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has dismissed demands by the BNP to reinstate the caretaker government provision, recently proposed forming an all-party interim government in an interview with BBC Bangla Service in London.
In her reaction, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Monday, said, "Elections will have to be hosted under a non-partisan caretaker government, not an interim government. Or else we will not allow it to take place."
The BNP has been staging demonstrations demanding reinstatement of the caretaker government provision ever since it was annulled by the 15th Amendment to the constitution.
