Local NGOs demand recognition of small ethnicities

. UNB, Dhaka
Coalition of Local NGO, Bangladesh (CLNB) on Tuesday demanded recognition of small ethnicities constitutionally instead of indigenous people and renaming of the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs (MCHTA).

The leaders of CLNB also suggested observing the "International Day of the World's Indigenous People" in the name of Small Ethnicities Day. They placed the demand at a discussion organized by CLNB at the National Press Club in the city.

Speaking on the occasion, Nagorik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna criticised the government, saying that ruling party is trying to foil the observation of world indigenous day.

He said indigenous people fought for the country during the liberation war but they have been ignored in the constitution for not being recognised there.

At the discussion, Chairman of CLNB Harunur Rashid read out a statement on the topic of discussion. In his statement, he said a vested quarter comprising both foreigners and native people is trying to convert indigenous people into Christianity and demanded trial of those people.

He also stressed that MCHTA should be named after the Ministry of Small Ethnicities and Minorities Affairs and Quota System be distributed equally among all ethnic minorities.
